Vittna: S/T 7"
First vinyl release from Bunker Punks Discs & Tapes is the debut 5-song 7" from Raleigh hardcore punk band Vittna. After their 2017 demo tape, Vittna return with their brand of dark, but aggressive hardcore. They mix the barreling, urgent attack of Poison Idea with the dissonant guitar work and wonky rhythms of bands like Mecht Mensch or Die Kreuzen, but with a dash of Swedish punk flavor for good measure. This is all toppled by snarling vocals with lyrical themes concerning disdain for human nature's infringement on our surroundings.
7" comes packaged in fold-over sleeve with lyrics/info printed on inside. Front cover is screenprinted by hand in various colors. Limited to 300 copies.
Our take: Debut 7ā from this band out of Raleigh, North Carolina. I should acknowledge my bias right off the bat and note that Iām good friends with Vittna, but Iām pretty sure Iād be flipping out about this 7ā even if I had no preconceptions or context for it. Thatās because Vittnaās take on hardcore is both explosive and smart, balancing deft playing and inventive, technical songwriting with the heft and power that all great hardcore should have. On your first listen this EP will bowl you over with its big sound, meaty riffs, and bellicose vocals, all of which portray an intimate familiarity with d-beat classics like Discharge and Anti-Cimex. However, Vittna sprinkle the record with lighter touches as well. There are moments of subtlety like the Part 1-esque intro, the off-beat accents on āHands Around Your Neck,ā the dissonant, Voivod-esque riffing of āCognitive Dissonance,ā and the sensitive yet militant lyrics, which coalesce around the theme of environmentalism. If you love bands like Varaus, Articles of Faith, Sickoids, Die Kreuzen, and Mecht Mensch (all of whom have a similarly refined take on hardcore), Iām certain that youāll be as excited about Vittnaās debut as I am. Throw in an attractive screen-printed jacket that serves as an eloquent visual approximation of Vittnaās music and the deal is sealed.
