Shit Coffins: Termination 12"
When you suddenly shine a light in total darkness you can't see right away but your body still tries. It's a reflex. It's unavoidable. And in that moment, the struggle to maintain what little grip you had becomes so urgent and overpowering that you will do whatever you can just to see anything at all. Wether it means peace or annihilation at least that thing is familiar and you reach for it, right? SHIT COFFINS have that same urgency, contempt and anxiousness. With broken mirror hardcore like this it's no surprise it's coming from members of TALK IS POISON, NO STATIK and MASS ARREST. Smash yourself to this one.Â
Our take: Hardcore is a young personâs game, so when I saw that Shit Coffins featured members of No Statik and Talk Is Poison I wasnât jumping out of my chair to grab it. My mistake, because this RIPS. If youâre a fan of Talk Is Poison and Deathreat, you need to grab this record because it has a very similar sound to those bandsâ classic records, and itâs just as good. Those bands always felt like a reaction against the artsy and progressive direction that underground hardcore went in the 90s, getting back to the genreâs roots in pure, seething anger. While Shit Coffinsâ context is different, theyâre just as pissed. The recording is big and burly, and while there are a handful of mid-paced parts (side note: the drummerâs habit of using a disco beat during mid-paced parts gives them a unique, Killing Joke-type feel), youâre never a few seconds away from a full-bore assault when youâre listening to Termination. This band isnât trying to impress you, and they arenât trying to follow any kind of trend; theyâre just embodying pure savagery.
