While Gimmick has plenty in common with the nihilistic, full-bore US-style hardcore of peers like Electric Chair and and Suck Lords, they distinguish themselves with an extra-large helping of punk snot. There’s a gleeful, anarchic sense of chaos on Quarantine, reminding me of old bands like Sick Pleasure and Fang who abandoned all hope and tried to get what laughs they could while the world hurtles toward its inevitable self-immolation. It’s also perfect music for the anxious, forced introversion of present moment, sliding fluidly between adolescent tantrum, inspired rage, and depressed resignation.
