Foreseen: Untamed Force 12"
How many hardcore, let alone metal, bands exceed all previous efforts on their third LP? Some might argue that āFeel The Darknessā was Poison Ideaās prime. You could present āMaster Of Puppetsā and āReign In Bloodā, if youāre so inclined. Letās face it, these are a dying breed of exceptions to the rule.
And yet, like an icepick in the eye socket of logic, here stands Foreseen with āUntamed Forceā. In the landmine ridden field that is crossover, where bands can all too easily get it so wrong, Foreseen not only survive the death sentence of their sophomore record āGrave Dangerā (2017), but head out on a blunt force killing spree.Ā
āUntamed Forceā indeed. Rarely has a record title been more fitting. Vocalist Mirko Nummelin sounds more pissed off than ever, 12 years on. Drummer MĆ„rten Gustafssonās arms and feet generate enough power to make Finland energy self-sufficient. And finally, pushing the band over the edge, separating Foreseen from us feeble bastards, we have new member Ville Valavuo joining Jaakko Hietakangas to form what is arguably the sceneās deadliest six string tag-team.Ā
Foreseenās power is untamed but at the same time borne from hard work, a love for the craft and their musical community, and absolutely no excuses. Dig in, endure, stomp out, shoot to kill. Foreseen are for headbangers who havenāt been brainwashed by click tracks and digital recordings. Foreseen are for punks who can deal with a synth intro and harmonised solos. In 2022, āUntamed Forceā is the guiding principle that can inspire, but not be replicated, by the Kings of Hardcore Thrash.

Our take: Untamed Force is Foreseenās third album, but itās my introduction to the band. We carried their first two LPs on the respected metal label 20 Buck Spin, but I never got around to listening to them⦠they seemed to exist just outside the scene I pay attention to. While I donāt follow contemporary thrash and crossover, I love plenty of classics, and those are likely the records that inspired Untamed Force. There are plenty of moments that sound like classic Bay Area thrash, but thereās also some very complex riffing that has a virtuosic quality similar to technical thrash bands like Forbidden or Artillery. There are also a lot of breakdowns, some that have a classic Exodus-type sound and others that have more of a Cro-Mags influence. One of the most interesting moments on the record is the song āOppression Fetish,ā which oscillates between a triumphant power metal groove and a spin kick-inducing mosh part, two styles I never would have thought could work together so well. As a whole, Untamed Force comes off as ambitious and composed, military in its execution, its power undeniable. Not the typical fare at Sorry State, but I think this is interesting and exciting enough that it should interest people outside the typical scene boundary lines.
