I think itâs safe to say that Canada is and always has been harboring some of the greatest punk/hardcore bands in the game. This record reiterates that notion and proudly carries the torch onward. Montrealâs BLEMISH unleashed these seven songs of sublimity on cassette via A WORLD DIVIDED TAPES back in September of 2021. Now, nearly a year later, NOT FOR THE WEAK RECORDS is excited to expand the housing of these tracks onto the well-deserving 12â vinyl format. While taking inspiration from a plethora of early 80âs UK punk, the band also reaches into their bag of influence, blending in a perfect amount of gothic/post punk elements. Vocals are at the forefront of this charge, leading you into a hypnotic state of psychosis while burning their enchanting melodies deep into your brain. Equally as hook driven is the guitar, backed up beautifully by bass and drums, gluing the entirety of the mix together, and adding up to the sensational sound we now know asâŠBLEMISH!!! Each record comes in a standard glue pocket LP jacket and includes a risograph poster/insert.
Our take: Virginiaâs Not for the Weak Records has made a name for themselves with a string of killer hardcore records, but this debut 12â from Montrealâs Blemish is a slight left turn for the label. By far the most melodic release on NFTW so far, Blemish reminds me of the anthemic, â77-inspired punk of bands like Legal Weapon, UXA, the Avengers, and (more recently) Vexx. While they might sound more straightforward against the backdrop of the pure hardcore bands on NFTW, Blemishâs take on the style is powerful, with plenty of heft to the playing and the production. Blemish is blessed with both an outstanding vocalist and a great lead guitar player, each of whom vies for your attention throughout this all-killer, no-filler 7-song EP.
