Rifle: Holloway Demos cassette
Lo-fi Oi!/garage-inflected punk from London.
Our take: California label No Solution brings us the demo tape by this London punk band. These four tracks take stylistic cues from early Wire, with the opening track, āNo Pasaranā in the proto-hardcore / fast art punk vein a la ā12XUā and subsequent tracks leaning more toward the pop-inflected songs on Pink Flag like āMannequinā or āFragile.ā The band that Rifle really reminds me of, though, is the Shitty Limits, who also took a lot from early Wire but also encompassed retro 80s hardcore and 90s budget rock, all with a liberal dash of British grayness (or, more appropriately, greyness). This style is like musical comfort food to me, a bunch of things I like all thrown together into a rich and satisfying stew that makes me feel ready to face the world. A killer tape, and I hope we hear more from this band.
