Fresh off of accolades from The AV Club’s 2017 The Year in Band Names, (https://www.avclub.com/and-of-course-anal-trump-the-year-in-band-names-2017-1820336004) Butthole University’s self-released debut 7”, ‘Slow Learner,’ lives up to its moniker: dumb punk isn’t supposed to be this smart. Sonically, imagine New Bomb Turks’ bombastic and sarcastic garage punk, but replace the rock’n roll swagger with biting spite. Not the spite that stems from teenage brattiness, but a more seasoned and embittered approach, like middle management purgatory. Hidden in Butthole University’s brashness is a pretty funny record -- this Brooklyn band pushes its hate firmly against their cheek by praising butt sex and coffee, while raging against white people and cops. The video for “Caffeine Queen” and t-shirts display an unhealthy obsession with Garfield, as if the sloth feline were some spiritual animal, tolerating Jon Arbuckle’s mostly lame institutional oppression. Maybe that’s looking too far into it, but that’s what dumb punk does.
